SCHOOL VISITS

Not only are we committed to serving quality meals, but we believe in educating our students on what they are consuming. Monthly, we schedule our Chefs, Dietitians, Food Around the World Program, and Michigan Farmers to visit the students that we service. The young scholars will be introduced to new and exciting food items, nutrient facts, healthy eating habits, around the world themed meals and celebrations, all using local and fresh produce.

CHEF

In order to introduce our students to new food experiences, we send our chef to visit our school. During the visit, the chef will do an interactive cooking demonstration that encourages students to try something that may be new to them. The students will get a chance to experience how their lunches are prepared by the chef and the kitchen staff, assist the chef in preparing a meal on school grounds, and ask questions regarding ingredients, techniques and healthy eating.

FOOD AROUND THE WORLD

Allow us to take the students on a tour around the world through international cuisine. On these “Food Around the World” days we will introduce the students to different cultures through music and food. This will expand cultural awareness and present healthy foods from other countries. As music is a universal language, it will capture the students' attention and will be the gateway to the increased complexity of their palates.

MICHIGAN FARMER VISITS

We want our students to know where the foods they eat come from. We coordinate visits from a diverse group of Michigan Farmers. We have established an alliance with the Black Farmers Association to help educate kids in our diaspora. This aspect of our program is important not only to the health of the students, but it also increases their awareness of successful minority business owner. In conjunction with this partnership,We have also obtained 14 acres of farmland in Belleville, MI. This land will be used to grow our own produce for our farm to school programs.

DIETITIAN

We pride ourselves in having a registered dietitian on staff. It is very important for students to know how healthy eating and daily activities directly affect their lives. Our dietitian educates the students on subjects such as food health, dietary facts and food-borne illnesses. The objective of the program is to promote awareness of how nutrition affects overall health and long-term wellbeing for the students and their families. These sessions work best in smaller groups such as a health or gym class.
